Excerpt

from the Better Course (an intro to Christianity course taught at my church by myself and my pastor):

Theology is a map. If one only thoughtlessly repeats parrot fasion doctrines, then one misses their point. Creedal statements are not meant to contain God, but to say some of the things that He has revealed about Himself. Some people may have very exciting moments where they feel that they are confonted with the reality of God, and perhaps they are, but on their own, these moments, although exciting, lead nowhere. There is nothing to do about them. One may have them, and then, that's it. That is the attraction in a shallow and vague belief system - where one tries to feel the presence of God in nature. In practical terms it needs no change in one's life. I think if anyone, believer or not, examines their gut feelings enough, they'll sense that perhaps the biggest objection they have to Christianity is not a well-constructed intellectual obstacle but a cautious nagging "it might mean I have to do something". Thus we would very much like to stay away from anything deeper.
